A sneak peak of my dream-come-true Steampunk Wedding

On November 11, 2012 I had the honor and pleasure of marrying the most wonderful man in the world, Glenn Freund.  I was surrounded by the most supportive friends a girl could wish for, and a caring family.

The Science of Love & Romance” was a Steampunk themed wedding at Pine Rose Cabins in CA.  Glenn & Sheyne were married by Duane (aka Mooney), Nicholas & Katherine (Potts & Blackmore) where in the wedding party, and every single League of S.T.E.A.M. member helped create the day in one way or another.  Expect more photos to come.  It was quite an epic Steampunk Wedding.

Living up to self imposed expectations

I am learning a lot about many things while planning for this wedding.

One of my good friends & fellow League of Steamers planned a glorious DIY wedding before I knew them.  Both Glenn & I have heard epic stories about how amazing this wedding was.  Both her and her (current) husband are amazingly creative talented people.  They 100% did the wedding by hand and for under 10K. Glenn and I idolize them in this fantasy amazing wedding that we hear epic stories about. We want to make a wedding that is 100% ours and super unique and amazing and all the things we heard about their wedding.

It was this alternative perfect dream wedding idea that we were clinging too, while neither of us had even known them when they were married!!

I started asking more questions… Doing their wedding was 100% their full-time jobs in the months leading up to the affair. they where both contract workers and where able to schedule their jobs around the wedding.

While I do enjoy (or hate.. depending on the day) that same job-lifestyle, Glenn does not.  He has a set job with set hours Monday-Friday that, now in January he knows he will have next November.  I am hoping he will take some time off around the wedding itself, but only 1 of *might* be available to do wedding prep full-time in the weeks leading up to big day.
They set up their entire wedding themselves, the 1st ones at the venue, the last ones to leave DAY OF to get dressed and prepped for ceremony. and the last ones to leave after they had folded up all the chairs on their own wedding night.

It occurred to me.. no matter how alternative nerd crazy chick I think I am.. I don’t want that kind of wedding day. I would like to get my hair & make up done for day. Be able to giggle with mimosa’s with my bride maids & cry with my mom before the event itself.

I kinda wonder if this makes me less cool for wanting a bit more of a traditional experience….

The Proposal

On July 1st 2011 at the Labyrinth of Jareth ball (LoJ) in Los Angeles CA, my companion/lover and best friend of 5 years asked me to marry him. I did say yes!

It was an amazing evening, because when my love does something important he does it big!   As readers of this blog might surmise, both him and I are members of the Steampunk performance troupe, The League of S.T.E.A.M.  In the past we have worked LoJ, but this year we had decided we didn’t want it to be a big production (ie be able to go as patrons vs performers and enjoy the evening).  We came to the agreement  to be atmosphere on Friday night in exchange for entry on Saturday evening.  About 2 weeks before LoJ, an (apparent) decision was made to do a small performance for 5-10 mins on the main stage.  As far as I knew, we were planning on doing an equipment demo and introduce our 2 new ghosts.

Glenn had planned this entire “stage skit” so he could get me on stage (in an un-suspicious manner) and ask me the big question in front of everyone.   It was magical.  Everybody was in on it, the entire league, Syher Crew (they run LoJ), many friends and associates in the audience.

Here you can see the proposal.  The audio quality is not great, and I know I backed up out of shock, but here it is in all it’s glory!

the 1st photo taken when I walked off stage.

and now, the ring! which was the 1st thing I posted on Facebook alerting our friends (who were not at event) to our engagement

as I posted "Glenn will make an honest women out of me"

and just today I found a pretty cute photo taken by the awesome Lycan Hunt of Lycan Productions with in 1 hour of the proposal backstage.

I am unable to express how in shock and how dazed I was the rest of the night

I love him so much and I can’t wait to become his legal partner (in crime)

League of S.T.E.A.M. at Doo Dah Parade

League of S.T.E.A.M. at Doo Dah 2011

On the morning of Saturday April 30th, the League of S.T.E.A.M. marched in the Doo Dah Parade 34th occasional in beautiful Pasadena.  This was our 1st time participating in such an event.  We really didn’t know what to expect, except for wacky & silliness.  “The Pasadena Doo Dah Parade is a popular farcical and flamboyant parade held in Pasadena, California about once a year, usually in the fall or winter.” from Wikipedi.  I don’t think that the entry really does this thing justice.  It was filled with crazy hippies, stilt walkers,  legalize weed folk, costumed folk, teachers dressed in pink asking for hugs, roller skating EVERYTHING, and so much more.    I encourage everybody to check out the Flickr Links I am going to post on the bottom.

this is Doo Dah!!!

Our Roster for that day was:

Lady Ameliorette Potts – Tactical Coordinator

Lady Ameliorette Potts

Tactical Coordination Specialist

“When the League finds itself in a troublesome spot (as is too frequently the case), Lady Potts is undoubtedly the one who will fix the situation”

Lady Ameliorette Potts carrying the H.U.G. (Hunting Utility Gun).  We can see that today she decided to wear her awesome orange tartan skirt, which she made to match a pair of pants she made for her husband (for Valentine’s day… sooo cute!!).  her hat is missing her usual circle glasses… maybe because she lent them to me, so I could walk in a straight line… I’ve become quite dependent on sunglasses.. which doesn’t always go well with costuming.  We got to do 2  H.U.G. demonstrations during the course of parade.

Jasper Mooney Lycanthrope: Disposal Specialist

Jasper Mooney

Lycanthrope Disposal Specialist

“Jasper Mooney is dedicated to an unceasing quest to ferret out and abrogate lycanthropes, and he has honed his seeking, searching, and stalking skills to a keen edge. These uncanny abilities, coupled with advanced steam propulsion theory and cinnabar-driven contrivances, render all lycanthropic entities harmless and hairless.”

At the Doo Dah, Jasper decided to carry his trap pack (not visible in photo) and also swing the League Hammer around.

Baron von Fogel - Apparition Tracker

Baron von Fogel
Apparition Tracker (usually our Zombie Hunter)

Ususally the Baron is our #1 Zombie hunter, but today he played a different but very important role.  using JR’s EVP – R2 in order to monitor electronic voice phenomena and other supernatural evidence.  In my searching for photographs to use in this post, I was unable to find an “Only the Baron” photo, so I cobbled together all the shots of him I could find in other photographs.  which in turns kinda makes me look stalkerish.. but I swear he belongs to Ms. Blackmore and I was just trying to do him photographic justice!

Ellie Copperbottom

Ellie Copperbottom

W.A.T.C.H. Liaison

oh hey that’s me!  I don’t have a fancy/smancy write up to copy/paste from the League (or W.A.T.C.H.) website, so I’ll just post a lot more photos of myself then anybody else (to make up for it.. you know?)  I got the pleasure of carrying around the Punchy Fist.  it made a most excellent post card distributor. You can see me wearing Lady’s sunglasses.. I have goggles on (WTF?! really? I never wear goggles…) mostly because my mini hat was not staying in hair and I needed something on my noggin!

Coyote W.A.T.C.H. Liaiso

W.A.T.C.H. Liaison

my handsome, charming and dapper fellow Coyote!  He is wearing his “official Coyote” suit which we all love but he is getting very bored with.  He is carrying the “Electric Immobilization Engine” aka the baby eel powered shock machine!  Even though we were “marching” he found the time to give people in the crowd demonstrations (and not at all shocking himself….)

Katherine Blackmore – Undead Pulverizer

Katherine Blackmore

Friend & ally of the League

“Ms. Blackmoore is contracted by the League of STEAM on a regular basis to aid in their efforts to reduce the population of the living dead. An expert with blunt objects, she favors baseball and cricket bats as her primary skull-crushing weapons.”

Kitty (as I like to call her… even though she hates it) decided to leave the cricket bat at home and dawn her romantic interests Rocket pack!  because she was planning on showing off it’s high jumping abilities, of course she had to wear the proper head-gear.  Much like every time the Barron has tried to show the world how well his jump pack works, there appeared to be a small malfunction and Kitty was unable to jump higher then 1 story.  She would have really liked to have that jumping ability in order to dodge the tortillas & marshmallows which flew at us from every direction.

a mysterious zombie hunter.

Hope the Zombie Killer

Hope (as I am deciding to call him in this post) is our esteemed Producer and all around amazing human who you might not always see on stage or on-screen.  But I can tell you with 100% confidence the League would not be where it is now w/out this mans help and hard work. For the Doo Dah he decided to be a Barron doppelgänger, wearing the zombie hunting cutting arm and bloody shirt.  it was really awesome to have him all dressed up and out with us, vs having him run around behind the scenes with a clipboard telling us where to be in 5 minutes!

Madame D. Stroy

Madam D. Stroy Friend and ally of the League.

Madame D. has been a friend of the league ever since we all went to the same traditional irish wake, and there turned out to be a murder was in our midst!  The event was pretty well documented in this Music Video, by Panic! at the Disco.  Madam D. is a mysterious one-eyed women strikingly beautiful women, and even we at the League know very little about her before the Wake.

…and now “The Help”

We used our Zombies to carry the League of S.T.E.A.M. Banner!

and our zombies are….

Zeddediah - Gentleman's Gentleman

“A tireless and dedicated servant, assistant, valet and confidant to Mr. Potts and company, Zeddediah is one half of a dedicated duo. By relieving the League of distracting day-to-day worries and allowing them to focus on their innovations and the containment of supernatural plagues of mankind, Zeddediah and his twin brother Thaddeus have proven to be an integral part of the team.” Zed did a great job holding up half of the League Banner that day.  his collar only went off a few times and there were no casualties this time!!  Though we will admit, having him on average about 20 feet ahead of most league members, did make hearing his alarm and capturing him to wind it up again a bit of a challenge.

Alice the Zombie Maid

Alice the Zombie maid is a relatively new addition to the League household.  She was introduced with our second Bar Sinister show, the benefits of Zombie Domestication, and is a prime example of a second stage zombie (freshly dead) saved by the League superiority technology and gadgetry.  If the League had not captured her during a mission and equipped her with a domestication collar, she would have reached stage 3 (full zombie) and decapitation would have been her only future.  She is carrying the other half of the League of S.T.E.A.M. Banner.  Her collar functioned perfectly at this event, and she never threaten any of the audiences members.

And now what I’m sure you all want… more pictures!!!!

Ellie Copperbottom & Madam D.Stroy

Alice really enjoying her job.
Alice, Madam D.Stroy & Ellie Copperbottom

Even though these following photos are not of us, or even… me.. (I know I know.. what are they doing here…) I wanted to share that there were apparently OTHER ZOMBIES IN THE PARADE!! and we some how totally missed them!!! it would have been great to capture a few more, we’ve got an idea for mounting banners on the back of Zombie’s Samurai style!

Zombie Lady
oh noes! Zombie eating a dog brain!
Zombie School Girl

There were also some amazing Penny Farthings!! I though the Steampunk Crew might enjoy seeing these pictures (even if the riders could be wearing MUCH more dapper attire)

A few more “behind the scenes” Style photos:

Ellie had A LOT of fun with the Punchy Fist!
A LOT of fun!

and one of my fav shots, of our lovely Zombie Maid!

isn’t she pretty? somebody gave her a flower!

All in all, the League was happy they decided to March in the Doo Dah, not sure if we will do so again, but a good time was had!  we handed out every single postcard we brought with us, and I know I gave A LOT of “epic fits bumps” using the punchy fist!

Many photos taken from:

If you want to see more Doo Dah 2011 Photographs, I highly encourage everybody to check out above links. I only posted a very very small sampling of how crazy the Doo Dah is!

Let me leave you with… my favorite from the entire parade…

Tea with Gail Carriger author of the Parasol Protectorate

On sunday April 10th myself and my amazing man Glenn got the opportunity to attended the “Afternoon Tea with Gail Carriger” hosted by our friend Donna Ricci of Clockwork Couture.  For those of you who do not know, Gail Carriger is the author of a successful series of Steampunk novels starting with Soulless, (from amazon) “Soulless is a comedy of manners set in Victorian London: full of werewolves, vampires, dirigibles, and tea-drinking.”  Donna is the cover model for the books.

The Parasol Protectorate (so far) by Gail Carriger, cover model Donna Ricca

Glenn & I took this opportunity to dress up and mingle with other like-minded people with gusto!  We had an alternative mission of approaching Gail Carriger about being a guest on the STEEM Geaks Podcast.  Mission aside, I was very excited about event, and took it upon myself to try to read all 3 publish Parasol Protectorate books before the Tea Party.

Sheyne & Glenn with autographed ticket.

Tea Rose Garden in Pasadena CA

The event was held at the a cute little Tea room  Tea Rose Garden in the Old Town district of Pasadena, California.  It was a cute little Tea shop right off the well trafficked Colorado blvd.

The Gail Carriger tea party took up the entire front dinning room.  Tea Rose Garden appeared to also sell Flowers, so each table had a very simple but elegant rose centerpiece.  I was impressed, I often stop to smell roses & the ones in the arrangement had a very soft but pleasant aroma!

These roses smelled just as nice as they looked

Gail sat at a table with Donna Ricci, and I believe 2 gentlemen who won the tickets off ebay!  Everybody looked quite happy the entire time.  the gentleman in the white suit and straw hat was a character!  we had seen him & his partner eating lunch at a sidewalk cafe while we walked to event, he tipped his hat to me and that sort of things sticks with a lady!

The event played out as such:  Intro/welcome by Gail & Donna.

Tea was served, everybody at tables chatted as Gail went table to table to chat with guests.  After this, Tea platters where served, more time was had to socialize with our table mates.

Gail socializing with tables full of avid fans!

Gina & Erin, awesome table-mates & classy ladies

Glenn & I, walking in with less then 15 minutes to spare, had to sit at at table with 2 girls we had never met before.  We will be honest, we chose that table because the girls looked fabulous and they both had awesome hats!

Gina & her fabulous hat fastener

Erin with her fashionable hat & collar

I hope to be able to find these 2 girls again, either online or in real life!  The women on the left is Gina, and the one of the right is Erin!  we ended up really enjoying their company (and hats) and joined them for a post tea party drink at a bar across the street!

the tasty & lovely tea platter

The Tea Party platter consisted of two different sandwiches; egg salad and then classic cucumber with mint.  The next layer up had cranberry & blueberry scones mixed with  soft sweet shortbread cookies. it was all topped off with an amply array of berries & fruits!  Everything I tasted was very good.  The servers were very on top of the tea, they offered 2 different style, our table mostly stayed with the classic English breakfast tea (and proceeded to get incredibly hyper over course of event).

Gail Carriger reading something awesome!

After everybody had been given enough time to nibble at the plates and continue good conversation and speculation, Gail stood up again to read something unpublished…   She outright declared she would deny whatever we print on was on the internet, so I will just say it was funny & delightful!  I am so glad I managed to read (even if in the wrong order….) all of the Parasol Protectorate books ahead of time!

Gail Carriger reading more awesome stuff!

Gail then spoke about her literary future, after the Parasol Protectorate (which will consist of 5 books) she will move on to a young adult series.  The series will take place in the same universe as the previous book series, but will be 20 years further in the past,  in a different geographical area with a totally different set of characters.  though being the books all deal with immortals, It’s very plausible that there might be some characters who we have already met making an appearance.. though technically because it’s in the chronological post.. we haven’t met them yet.  but we have.. hold on.. I’m getting distracted..

After all of that she took questions, about her books, her characters, her own literary process.  There were a lot of different questions.  I decided I liked Gail more and more with every answer given.  I really appreciated that she is very passionate about including LGBT characters in her books.

Sheyne enjoying whatever Gail had just read or said!

The event was a great success, and both Glenn & myself had a great time!

All of the photos I’ve used have been taken from Clockwork Couture Gallery on facebook, and shot by Pixie Vision Productions (on facebook here).  I will post a few more, but I encourage everybody go and check out the full Gallery!

page 88 of LA Weekly 2010 People of LA

Yep! that is me!!!

a little back story:

A few months ago, friend & LA Weekly reporter Liz Ohanesian sent me an email to inform me that she had submitted my name to be profiled for this issue.  LA Weekly approved it therefore, her and I sat down for a nice interview at Royal/T in Culver City.  After letting (and encouraging) me babble for about an hour we parted ways.  A month or so after that Photographer Kevin Scanlon contacted me and we arranged for him to come to my place and photograph me surrounded by my crap!

Well, this is the week that the issue came out, and I am just tickled pink and thrilled beyond belief with how it all turned out.

The photo is just…. great.. it might be one of the best photos taken of me ever.  you want to see a better version of it?

For those who are not in the LA area, and can not just pick up a current LA Weekly…. Here is a link to the article on LA Weekly Blog:

Red and Pink Stripes or Barbie circus hell room!

I was born and raised in the San Fransisco Bay Area.  My parents and both brothers live within 5 miles of each other.  My oldest brother has 2 girls 6 & 2 years old.  These girls are my mothers only grandchildren, and the only children in our immediate family.  To say that the girls are adored and maybe even slightly spoiled could be considered an understatement.  But that is not the point of this blog.

My brother told my mother when the eldest was still a baby, that she could only spend the night at Grandma’s house if there was a pink bedroom to sleep in (it was 1/2 a dick move and 1/2 a joke).   I told my mother when the opportunity happened I would come up north, clean out the extra bedroom, and paint the walls.  I followed through and  spent 2 weeks digging through old dusty boxes of family crap history and transforming this room into a pretty perfect little girls room.

I could write 10 blog posts about the wonders I found while digging,: old super 8 film my late Grandfather shoot (we’ve dropped some off to be transferred to DVD), my childhood barbie collection, photos of my mother and brothers before she married my father…  I dropped off over 10 pounds/25 years worth of misc wires & cords to an E-waste collection spot, and filled my back seat with donations for goodwill.  This room, for nearly all of the 20+ years my folks have lived in this place, has been a “warehouse.”  We have thrown everything and anything into this room.

All of the clean up work really paid off.  the second week was spent painting & taping and then painting some more.  I decided I wanted to do something fun.  Pink & white striped walls really appealed to me.  but the eldest niece told me she REALLLLY wanted the room painted red, so the concept morphed into pink & red stripes.  Negotiating with mom, we came to the decision of: 2 walls of pink, 1 wall of red (where the headboard of bed would be) and 1 wonderfully wacky wall of pink & red stripes!

I document the process with my Iphone.  the pictures are not great, and I need to apparently clean my lens.

mid being cleaned

taping up the molding

wow, the room is brilliant white!

everything looks soo clean!

OMG such barbie pink

pink closer to real color

the color looks correct here!

Sure it looks just like a darker/deeper pink

the crazy begins!

Stripey wall

behold the wall ostripes!!!

title says all.

hi hallway!
